GIRLS SKILLS PROGRAM

The George Bell Hockey Association proudly supports the development of female players in the community.  GBHA’s hockey league is CO-ED and therefore open to both male and female players starting at age 3.  Although GBHA does NOT have a Girl’s ONLY Hockey League, it has pledged its commitment to the development of female players by providing Girl’s ONLY SKILLS SESSIONS in addition to the Co-ed House League program.  Girls do not need to sign up for the Girls Skills Session, they need only be registered in the GBHA House League program to have access to these sessions.

For many, the GBHA house league program will be a girl's first exposure to organized athletics and team sports.  Knowing that this first experience can have a lasting effect on their self-esteem and self-confidence, George Bell Hockey Association understands it is important to make it a positive experience!  The skills sessions aim to be fun and engaging so that girls of all ages will see how sports can enrich their lives with Friends, Fun and Fitness for a lifetime!

WE HAVE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE TO RUN THIS PROGRAM FREE OF CHARGE FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS THANKS TO SPONSORSHIP BY:

Frequently Asked Questions About Girls at George Bell Hockey Association:

Q:  Does George Bell Hockey Association have a Girl’s Only Hockey League?

A:  No.  GBHA runs a Co-Ed hockey league.  Therefore, all girls will be integrated with boys on hockey teams.

Q:  What day/s will the Girls Skills Sessions take place?

A:  Unfortunately the GBHA ice schedules will not be available until closer to September.  Please check back with the GBHA website in late August to see the fall/winter schedule.

Q:  How frequently do the Girls Skills Sessions take place?

A:  This changes year to year depending on sponsorship money available and ice time availability.  We aim for once every week or every other week.  The sessions are divided up so that the younger girls (Tykes and some Novice) are on together for one session and then the next session will be the older girls (Novice to

Q:  How many girls will be on my daughter’s house league team?

A:   It varies each year, but there have been between 3 and 4 girls per team in the Tyke and Novice division for the last two years.  The numbers are lower in the older divisions, but continue to increase each year (some divisions with less girls try to group girls together on teams).

Q:  Who instructs the Girls Only Skills Sessions?

A:  Volunteer coaches - both female and male - will run these sessions.  When donation/sponsorship money is available we aim to hire professional female coaches.  In the past we have been VERY fortunate to have Toronto Furies players leading our session (The Furies are Toronto’s professional female team!).

Q:  How many girls are registered at GBHA?

A:  There are approximately 85 girls registered in GBHA’s House League program.  There are also approximately 15 girls participating in the Select Level Hockey program throughout the divisions.

PLEASE NOTE:  This program is available ONLY when sponsorship/donation money is available to cover ice costs.  If you are interested in supporting this program please contact Girls’ Program Convenor:  Alice Bell (alicebell@sympatico.ca).
